Appropriate use of mobile phones by students
The use of mobile phones can be disruptive to the learning environment of all students. Morayfield State School has therefore put into place this policy to ensure that the rights of all students and staff are respected as well as ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment. We adhere to the Department's policy of:
PHONES AWAY FOR THE DAY
Mobile phones are used at their owner's risk. In the event of the loss, theft or damage of any device, the school will accept no liability unless it can be established that the loss, theft or damage resulted from the department's negligence. Students MUST hand their phones into the office each morning and collect them after school.
There are times when it is genuinely appropriate and beneficial for students to have access to a mobile phone. This is to be decided by the student and their parent or caregiver. Students may need to contact parents in emergencies or to confirm collection details for after school. However, except in times of genuine emergency, mobile phone use is not acceptable at Morayfield State School.
If mobile phones are brought to school they are the responsibility of the student until placed in the office.
Students MUST hand their phones into the office each day.
Students must have their mobile phones switched off so that they do not 'ping' whilst in storage in the office.
- Students are not to use mobile phones to contact parents in a way, which would circumvent normal school procedures.
In-phone cameras are not to be used anywhere a normal camera would be considered inappropriate. Nor are students to photograph or film others without their consent. That includes before and after school.
Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against any student who breaches any of these rules.
Can I use my smartwatch?
Wearable devices, including smart watches can be worn during school hours.
However, notifications must be switched off so that phone calls, messages and other
notifications cannot be sent or received during school hours.
Can I use my phone or wearable device at lunch or between classes?
No, your phone must be switched off and put away for the entire school day, including during
break times and transitions between classes.
Why am I being asked to put my phone away for the day?
This approach is being implemented in all Queensland state schools to help:
• reduce distractions in the classroom
• increase and improve face-to-face conversations and interactions between students
• promote student health and wellbeing
• reduce the potential for student exposure to negative impacts of the digital world, such
as cyberbullying.
I use my mobile phone / wearable device to manage and monitor a
health condition. Can I still use it?
Yes, exemptions will be made available if you require access to your mobile phone or wearable
device for health monitoring purposes.
Please speak with your parent and school principal regarding processes for requesting an
exemption.
This policy also applies to students during school excursions, camps and extra-curricular activities. Students wishing to use their mobiles in special circumstances should negotiate arrangements with the relevant school staff prior to departure of the activity.
