Guidance Officers are experienced teachers who have completed additional qualifications in psychology and education. Their role involves working with students and teachers often in conjunction with parents or carers, specialist support staff and community and government agencies.
Guidance Officers identify factors that can be barriers to a student’s learning and development and they assist with planning school programs or school interventions that can help achieve better educational outcomes.
A Guidance Officer’s duties can vary depending on the needs of the school and community in which they work. They may help with psycho-educational assessment, school placement, disability, child protection, mental health, behaviour and career education.
Guidance Officers focus on the educational needs of students but frequently provide referrals for students to medical, health and family support services. Guidance support can be accessed through the student’s class teacher or school administration.
